Start on Stadtwanderweg 1 at Nußdorfer Platz or at the end of tram D on Zahnradbahnstraße.
Follow the Beethovengang, past the Beethovenpark, further into the Wildgrubgasse. Past the cemetery you will find a beautiful field heuriger in the middle of the vineyard in the warm season: ‘Buschenschank Wanderer at the foot of the Nussberg’.
Follow the Wildgrubgasse, which leads next to the Schreiberbach, past vineyards. Then it goes uphill – to the Heuriger ‘Mayer am Nussberg’. The ‘Sirbu am Nussberg’ wine tavern is also nearby.
It continues upwards via Kahlenbergerstraße. The penultimate section of the route leads through the forest on the Heinz-Werner-Schimanko-Weg. Then a few more meters along Kahlenberger Straße and you have already reached the Kahlenberger viewing terrace. Enjoy the wonderful view of Vienna and the Danube. Come in and enjoy yourself.
You can also cover the entire hiking route with the ‘Vienna Heurigen Express’ – a slow train that is very fast on the way. The Vienna Heurigen Express I begins its journey at the U4 Heiligenstadt underground station, continues to the Nussdorf terminus of tram line D, travels through the wine-growing region over the Nussberg to the Kahlenberg and back via the Heurigen village of Grinzing, past the Beethoven Museum in Probusgasse to Pfarrplatz and finally back to the starting point U4 Heiligenstadt.
The same footpath back is very nice. Of course, there is also a bus to the Kahlenberg and back to the city. Or you can take the ‘Vienna Heurigen Express’.
Heurigen tip – Heuriger Hirt: If you take the same hiking trail back, you can also visit the ‘Heurigen Hirt’ in Eisernenhandgasse 165 just below the Kahlenberg. The view over the Danube is really beautiful.
Hiking tip – Grinzing: You go back down the Wildgrubgasse and take the ‘Grinzinger Steig’ at the cemetery to the famous wine tavern town of Grinzing. In Grinzing you have the opportunity to visit one of the many wine taverns – for example the ‘Alter Bach-Hengl’, which can be found just around the corner. (PS: Even if there is no Heurigen flair – Nino’s Pizzeria on Himmelstrasse is also highly recommended.)
The legendary tram line 38 (or the bus) will take you back to the city center to the Schottentor in the footsteps of Hans Moser after visiting the wine tavern in Grinzing – or you can change to the U6 subway, which runs along the Gürtel.
