The Most Beautiful Wine Cellar Alley – Galgenberg, Lower Austria

Romantic Tour in the Galgenberg Kellergasse in Lower Austria

The romantically situated Kellergasse Galgenberg in the municipality of Wildendürnbach in the Weinviertel was voted the most beautiful cellar lane in Lower Austria in 2013.

From Wildendürnbach to the Most Beautiful Kellergasse on the Galgenberg

The most beautiful Kellergasse 2013 is located approx. 1 km outside the municipality of Wildendürnbach in the Austrian Weinviertel. A gallows stood on this mountain until 1828, which probably served as a deterrent. Today, the Galgenberg Kellergasse is known for delicious wine and for the beautiful, romantic cellar lane. Vineyards, over 180 press houses and wine cellars are a sight – a kind of power place where you can find peace and relaxation.

The Kellergasse is arranged in a ring around the Galgenberg and can be easily hiked through. Lots of romantic seating and full wine cellars invite you to take a break. With a good drop of wine you can enjoy the peace and quiet and really switch off and chat with friends. The gaze sometimes wanders far into the distance – even to the next town on the horizon, which is already in the Czech Republic.

Visitor Cellar

Another highlight in the Kellergasse is the visitor’s cellar, which is freely accessible at all times. Here you can help yourself and enjoy chilled wine and other refreshments. There is also a clean toilet facility just around the corner, which is also freely accessible 24/7. If you want, you can also document your visit in the guest book.

The Gate to the Tower

A curiosity on the Galgenberg is the church tower that can be seen from afar. In 1971, the dilapidated church had to be blown up and the tower was so well preserved that it was decided to rebuild the tower on the Galgenberg. Since then, the church tower without a church has been an attraction visible from afar.

A symbolic wooden gate shows the way up to the tower. There is a wine educational trail behind the gate. The special features of the grape varieties grown here are explained on display boards. Just a few more meters of altitude and you can enjoy the great view from the top of the mountain. Here you can also ring the church bell for fun, which can be heard from afar. To my surprise, an explanatory video even starts, which tells the story of this special place.

Weinbau Gerlinger – Delicious Wine, Hospitality and Cosiness at the Gerlinger Winery

Everywhere in the Kellergasse you meet hospitable winegrowers and cordial people, who spontaneously invite you to the wine cellar or to a cool refreshment in front of the cellar. I was particularly pleased about the invitation from Ms. Leisser, the beautiful mayor of Wildendürnbach. Together we visit Mr. Gerlinger’s wine cellar, which is right next to the visitor’s cellar.

I learned a lot from Mr. Gerlinger about the life of a winegrower and the peculiarities of viticulture in this special place. A beautiful sunny late summer day is coming to an end, which we enjoy together with a good drop and interesting conversations in the shady garden in front of the wine cellar. As if all that wasn’t enough – little bunnies and ground squirrels play in front of our eyes and provide additional entertainment.

Spend the Night – in the Cellar Lane, of Course

After a cozy summer evening in the Kellergasse, we recommend an overnight stay directly in the Kellergasse. The very quiet guest house is also within walking distance and is comfortably furnished. The small house in the Kellergasse offers every comfort from kitchen and dining table to shower and toilet. Information and bookings can be found on the host’s website: www.am-galgenberg.at
